Can an HIU be replaced with an electric boiler?
I live in a 1-bed flat in fairly new apartment building (2020) that uses HIUs (Heat Interface Unit) in every flat, with heat delivered from a central boiler in the building. The building management recently signed a new energy tariff that has created absurdly high bills of £250+ per month for heat (heating and hot water) and so I wanted to look at the viability of replacing the HIU entirely with an electric boiler to provide heating and hot water using the existing plumbing in the flat. In theory, this should only require mains water access and electricity to send hot water down the existing pipes.
Does that make any sense?

Replacing the HIU with an electric boiler is likely not a viable option for a flat within a building that uses a communal heating system with HIUs. While it might seem straightforward to replace the HIU with an electric boiler, there are significant practical and potentially legal obstacles to doing so.
