Replacing bath tub drain
I want to remove my old bath tub drain, (it is the old type with a plug) with the same type of drain and wanted to know if I can do it from above without having to remove the bath sides. Do I need to be able to access the underside plastic drain or can I just work from inside the bath tub from above to replace the metal drain plug socket?

If you mean change waste in your bath you need have access under the bath as well to fix that together.
Yes you will need to access under the bath normally by taking off the bath panel.
