Best way of removing artex?
We'd like to have a smooth finish to our plastered living-room ceiling which is currently artexed. What is the best way to achieve this?

there are a number of ways to achieve this, it depends on what condition the ceiling is in , is there any coving fitted, also how thick the artex is. if its alight patten, pva sealent and a skim finish will do it, a heavy pattern will require a bonding plaster coat prior to skim, and also you could overboard and skim, but be aware that artex produced in the70s/early 80s, contained asbestos, and scraping or sanding it releases it, and maybe harmful...
Change the ceiling is one way. If you want to do it an easy way then you will need a to remove all the pointed bits from the ceiling uni bond the ceiling plaster it to its level then apply finisher for a smooth finish leave it for 3 days to dry then apply a water Base paint two colts then paint it with any good quality bath ceiling paint. I like eggshell when it drys it makes a nice seal. I hope this helped.
Reboarding and skimming

Scrape and unibond it but this system can still fail so overboard
The best way would be to Bond the ceiling then with finish plaster to achieve a nice smooth finish. Or if you want to just take of the Artexed use a steamer to strip off then sand down smooth and paint. And when you Bond a ceiling don't forget to apply P.V.A Between each coat of plaster.
Arrest can be removed by scraping it down then plastering.

Empty room preferably
Scrape the proud artex buts back with a floor scraper wearing a dust mask
Once is smooth to touch,ready for either 2 coats of strong solution pva or application of blue grit
Once dried then 2 coats of multi finsh plaster. One completed. 24 hrs be Ready for decoration
Surface has to be levelled with bonding after brushing on PVA. Then skim with finishing plaster, usually 'multifinish'.
The best way to remove artex is by using X-Tex which allows the removal of textured coatings such as artex without causing dust from harmful asbestos fibres.
