Linear shower drain
I cleaned out my drain in the upstairs shower and removed a couple of plastic items from beneath the cover. I ran the shower without replacing these items and water poured through the floor. Was this because these items were missing or could I have damaged the drain/pipe when unblocking it?

The plastic items are likely part of the drain seal or trap; removing them can cause leaks. Water pouring through the floor is probably due to missing parts, not damage from unblocking
Many shower drains have parts like drain plugs, washers, or gaskets that are crucial for ensuring a tight seal and directing water flow. If any of these components were missing, the water may have escaped through the gap, causing it to leak through the floor below.
If these plastic items were part of the trap or seal under the drain cover, their absence would allow water to leak out and not be directed properly into the drainpipe.
2. Damage to the Drain/Drainpipe:
If you removed these items forcefully or if the drain was obstructed, there could be a chance that you damaged the drain assembly or pipe, particularly if the parts were brittle. Any cracks or misalignment in the pipe or fittings could cause leaks when the shower is running.
If the drainpipe was clogged and you cleared it with excessive force, there is a possibility that you could have dislodged or cracked parts of the pipe, leading to a leak.
It's because you didn't fit back the components or you didn't fit them the right way.
