Capping a chimney
I have a unused fireplace on the upstairs room of a detached house. I understand that even if the fireplace is not used you still need to let the chimney breathe. I have two differing bits of advise, one is a ventilation cowl (Redbank 190MM Flue Ventilator Cowl Red) or a C Cap Chimney capper. What is the best option or if there is a better alternative.
After the installation of either item is there anything else I need to install at the bottom end of the fireplace?

Hi if your chimney pot is 190mm in diameter the Redbank cowl is a good option although, I would recommend https://www.roofingsuperstore.co.uk/product/colt-cowls-econocowl-antidowndraught-cowl-150mm-to-250mm.html this cowl as it adjustable for most chimney pots, cheaper and easier to fit.

You should have an airbrick to meet building regs ,fitted to wall where fireplace once was unless still opened
Hi there if your capping the chimney this is easy, you can cap the pot or cap the stack itself, drilling a uphill hole into the stack can allow sufficient air flor or fitted a vented cowl etc… as long as air can circulate into and out the stack with out allowing rain water to pass through your be fine
I would personally not recommend any if you don’t intend on using the chimney again I would cap it off fully so remove the multi Liner flue then seal and point and flaunch top of chimney
There is no need to let the chimney stackbreathe it can be capped
Redbank 190MM Flue Ventilator Cowl Red and an air vent should also be used in the existing fire place to allow air flow.
